Upgraded Palm Oil Effluent Biogas Powering NGVs in Selangor

Technology developed by Xebec Adsorption Inc., a provider of biogas upgrading, natural gas, field gas and hydrogen purification and filtration solutions for the clean energy and crude-derived fuels displacement markets, is being used transform and upgrade the biogas from palm oil mill effluents (POME) into compressed natural gas (CNG) — renewable biomethane — for transportation use. The plant has a design capacity of 500 liters of gasoline equivalent per day.
The project, developed by Sirim’s Renewable Energy Research Center, has received attention from the national government with Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Malaysia’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, recently paying a working visit to the biogas upgrading plant located on Carey Island in Selangor. The plant was commissioned in June last year.
Given the size of the palm oil industry in South East Asia, the fourth largest contributor to the Malaysian economy, Xebec sees considerable potential for further development.
“If all the mills produces BioNG from palm oil effluents, it is estimated to be equivalent to 17% of the overall natural gas consumption and 10% of overall petrol consumption in Malaysia,” said the minister earlier this year.
Apart from fuel displacement, the benefits of biomethane fuel for Malaysia include a reduction of the dependence on fossil fuels, enhancement of fuel diversity, an increase in energy supply security and a reduction of carbon dioxide emission from the palm oil industry. The Selangor POME biogas upgrading project is the first of its kind in the world.
“Production of biogas from POME will truly benefit the Malaysian economy, as fuel prices are set to increase in future years due to global factors. I am sure that Xebec will be able to assist Malaysia’s efforts of producing alternative fuels for natural gas vehicles with Xebec’s proven and reliable biogas technology.” said Kurt Sorschak, President and CEO of Xebec.
