Konya Metro Adds 60 CNG-Powered TCV Karat Buses

With an average of 200,000 bus passengers daily, Konya, the largest city in Turkey in terms of surface area now provides public transportation using 60 Allison-equipped TCV Karat Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses which can reduce fuel costs and pollutants. The TCV Karat 12-meter bus’ power-pack consists of MAN’s 206 kW CNG engine and Allison’s T310R fully automatic transmission, reducing maintenance costs, providing extended maintenance intervals while also offering advantages in terms of minimum downtimes.
According to Aytunc Gunay, general manager of Bozankaya A. S., the new TCV CNG Karat buses have satisfied both efficiency and saving expectations. “Allison’s technology complements CNG engines, increasing torque during vehicle launch and smoothly transferring uninterrupted power to the tires,” he said.
As head of transportation planning and rail systems for Konya Metropolitan Municipality, Mustafa Esgi explains: “We have been using the new TCV Karat CNG buses with Allison fully automatic transmissions for several months and are very happy with the efficiency, low maintenance costs and ease of operation for our drivers, as well as the comfort of the passengers.”
With the 60 new additions, approximately 2,300 CNG vehicles will be operating in Turkey, requiring additional infrastructure. Within the scope of the tender, Konya Metropolitan Municipality included a dedicated CNG filling station with a 100 vehicle capacity. This brings the number of CNG stations in Turkey to 17, of which seven are accessible to the public.
