UAE Environment Ministry Commences Fleet Conversion to CNG

The Minister of Environment and Water, Dr Rashid Ahmed Mohammed Bin Fahad has launched the initial phase of a plan to convert the ministry’s fleet of vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), by unveiling 21 bi-fuel cars on November 11. The conversions were carried out by Emirates General Transport and Services Corporation (ET) technicians at the corporation’s workshops in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
The CNG conversion project is a joint operation between ET and Adnoc. Dr Bin Fahad said that the CNG fleet conversion plans are part of the ministry’s efforts to achieve its vision to ensure a sustainable environment for life, and activation of programs and projects that use clean energy sources and alternative fuels which would reduce carbon emissions.
The first phase of conversions is for sedans and SUVs used in Abu Dhabi and Sharja due to the availability of CNG fueling stations. Conversions in other parts of the UAE will occur as CNG infrastructure expands.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mohammed Abdullah Al Jarman, ET General manager, acknowledged the good working relationship between the Ministry and ET toward implementation of this project, stressing the importance of synergies between institutions and governmental organizations in the field of clean energy use. ET provided qualified technical work teams trained to carry out the tasks of conversion vehicles according to the highest standards of quality and service.
Compared with vehicles fuelled by conventional diesel and gasoline, natural gas vehicles can produce lower levels of harmful emissions while operating at lower cost.
ET organises and manages transport and maintenance services and supervision of their operation for the benefit of various federal and local government agencies, and private sector institutions.
