Government of Mexico Promotes Pilot Initiative for Natural Gas in Transport

When kicking off Expo Transporte ANPACT 2013 (13-15 November), the Mexican Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources, Juan José Guerra Abud, stated that the Federal Government is promoting a pilot initiative regarding the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in light and heavy vehicles, which involves the cooperation with local authorities, gas and car industries representatives, as well as corporate fleet owners.
The project, which will be carried out in the northeast region, aims to facilitate the introduction of technologies and ensure the supply of natural gas at a stable competitive price.
Mr. Abud explained the Transport sector is the fastest growing sector in the country and contributes the most to greenhouse gas emissions, in view of which it is a priority of the current Administration to assess green alternatives which may help meet reduction targets for pollutant emissions and benefit people’s health.
He highlighted that CNG has zero emissions of particulate matter and is estimated to be considerably more economical than traditional fuels.
Also present were Jorge Aristóteles Sandoval Díaz, Governor of Jalisco, and Miguel Elizalde Lizárraga, President of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers. Elizalde Lizárraga acknowledged the federal government’s support for transport through various programs and regulations which allows them to be more and more sustainable and competitive. Furthermore, he outlined ANPACT’s commitment to continue encouraging its members and public authorities to face and overcome the difficult scenario and strengthen the sector’s growth.
